Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)

What is SPD?

The symphysis pubis is a joint in the front part of the pelvis. During pregnancy there is a natural increase in the width of the symphysis pubis due to the laxity of the connective tissue under the influence of pregnancy hormones.  The increasing weight of the uterus also causes stress on the symphysis pubis joint.

Signs & Symptoms of SPD

Patients describe this pain as

  • Pain in pubic bone, pain in the groin
  •  Pain in the inside of the thigh – Can be one thigh or both thighs
  •  Low back Pain
  • Clicking or grinding can be felt and sometimes heard

The Onset of Pain can be

  • In pregnancy
  • During labour
  • Following delivery
  • Sudden

The mild – severe pain is exacerbated by

  • Walking
  • All weight bearing activities like trying to put on clothes in the morning like socks or jeans
  • Getting in & out of the bath
  • Getting in & out of the car
  • Getting in & out of the bed or moving around during sleep
  • Inability to stand on one leg

The Solution for SPD

Support and Relief can be achieved by wearing a Sacroiliac Belt.

It’s simple, Book an appointment with Lisa, who will measure you and fit you for a sacroiliac belt. Advice regarding the important Do’s and Dont’s for women with SPD will be explained. Handouts of Important pelvic strengthening exercises are provided.

LUMBAR BELTS VS SACROILIAC BELT

LUMBAR BELTS                                                           SACROILIAC BELTS

1. Takes the place of muscles, allowing atrophy.

1. Takes the place of ligaments, allowing normal functioning of the muscles because they no longer have to contract to stabilize the joint.

2. Designed to increase pressure in the abdominal cavity in order to take stress off the disc. Studies have shown that this does not happen.

2. Designed to compress and stabilize the sacroiliac joint, taking pressure off that joint and allowing normal function to occur.

3. Does not significantly reduce muscle spasm.

3. Nullifies the ligamento-muscular reflex, thereby significantly reducing muscle spasm in the back, abdomen, upper legs and shoulders.

4. Disc injuries occur in a relatively small proportion of low back injuries.

4. Recent research has found the sacroiliac joint to be the main cause of pain in the great majority of low back injuries.

5. The lumbar disc is relatively stable during bending, twisting and lifting compared to the sacroiliac joint.

5. The sacroiliac joint is as 20 times as susceptible to compress and 2 times as much to torsion as lumbar discs, these are the forces in bending, twisting and lifting.

6. Belts are bulky, uncomfortable and restrict movement.

6. These belts are small, comfortable and allow freedom of movement with no restrictions. It feels good to wear.

7. Should be worn only when lifting.

7. Can be worn all day, with no bad effects.

8. Does not increase muscle strength

8. These Sacroiliac belts increase strength throughout the body, especially in the trunk, upper thighs and arms.

All women could do with some type of support during pregnancy. If women get to us at the start of this condition, we can fit them with a Sacroiliac belt to stop it getting any worse. The earlier we get to see them, the less damage is done to the sacroiliac joints in the back articulating with the pubic symphysis joint in front.

Consultation fee is €50. Sacroiliac belts vary in price from €40 to €60.

We also provide a range of Maternity support belts which help when the bump is feeling very heavy, causing you to over- arch the small of your back and stick your tummy out. The Maternity support belts help alleviate the low back (lumbar) pain associated with pregnancy.

If you would like to book an appointment or discuss this further, please feel free to call us on 0402 23383 or 083 3034403.
